Posted by James Hunter on 7/14/2007, 12:24 pm The second point to make is that I really have mixed feelings about Grievoux's writing,on the one hand, he seems (from the little evidence we have in this issue) to have mastered Wolverine and Ms. marvel's "voices (they both "sound" right in my head) and he clearly understands the character of Night Thrasher - whomever it may be under the helmet (which should come as no surprise given how closely he followed Fabian Nicieza's and Kurt Busiek's run on the Night Thrasher series in the early 90s!) but yet he still hasn't mastered Sofia's voice. She just doesn't "sound" right in her dialogue and, as a fan of the character since her first appearance in the first issue of New Mutants volume 2, this just grates against me, I will admit that Grievoux's take on Sofia is marginally improved since the first issue however. I also don't think that his dialogue for Tony Stark is right as he seems, almost, overly shady but I can accept that this is simply Grievoux's personal take of Tony's actions (which I disagree with, but that's neither here nor there). The character of Sam is also starting to grate on me (he's just too obviously nothing more then a plot point, in my opinion). With that said, however, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised to see that Kevin Grievoux knows his New Warriors lore so well and remembers so many characters from the original run, he has to get major brownie points for mentioning Helix (who has not been seen anywhere since New Warriors (volume 1) #73 or thereabouts)! Presuming that it's not Dwayne in the "Night Thrasher" armour (personally I'm hoping it is, but that's neither here nor there, this point is still valid) and knowing, as we do, that there is going to be AT LEAST one returning Warrior, I can't help but wonder if the two given names (Firestar and Helix) were chosen on purpose, as clues to at least some of the warriors identities (I admit I may be stretching a bit, but it just made me wonder). On the subject of the members of this ncarnation of the Warriors I found it interesting to see the rest (or at least some) of the New Warriors, even if it was only in the shadow. I only recognised Decibal, Tempest and Wondra though, if I was meant to recognise any others I failed to. To go back to Grievoux's writing, for a second, I think I'm going to like his take on Jubilee (although her identity as Wondra was FAR from a surprise), certainly he seemed to have a solid grasp of her character in her 2 page appearance here BUT, in one way, I have to admit that Jubilee's presence in this title slightly bothers me. The title of this comic is New Warriors NOT "Ex-Mutants Anonymous", I can (just about) accept three ex-mutants, but I really hope there aren't anymore. I know there is speculation that Decibal is Jonathan Starsmore (formerly Chamber of Generation X) but, personally, I really hope that he's not for two reasons, first of all there's the one I gave above (in other words, "too many ex-mutants spoil the broth!") and second of all, it would make little sense for the character to leave the U.K and go back to the U.S especially after he told Pete Wisdom, in New Excalibur #9, that he has no desire to be involved in super heroics. My basic point is that three ex-mutants I can cope with but what I would like to see in this title is more variety! Despite all of it's faults, I have to say it's still nice to have the Warriors back in a monthly title (the novelty hasn't worn off yet!) and there ARE enjoyable elements within this title and I have a particular fondness for two members/potential members of this incarnation of the Warriors (Sofia and Beak). Cheers. James.

I have to say I'm stilldelighted to have the Warriors back in a monthly title but I'll try to be objective about this issue. In my opinion, Paco Medina's art is superb and he draws a particularly good Jubilee (at least she has not been regressed in age AGAIN since her last appearance, I get fed up of seeing her depicted as 14 to 15 years old considering her age when she first appeared and how long she has been around the Marvel Universe), that's the first point I have to make.
