Our son, 8 and half now, has suffered from biopsy-confirmed MCNS for the last 2 years. Has been on Prednisone for 2 years non-stop...we tried Cytoxan or Cyclophosphamide Aug 2007. Remission lasted 3 months - then he relapsed again. So it was not very helpful; nevertheless it is usually tried to wean off prednisone before other immunosuppressive agents (e.g. CellCept, Prograf, Rituxan, Cyclosporin, etc) are tried. We have been trying CellCept recently There was a 1982 (!!) study in the New Engalnd Journal of medicine - which indicated that Cytoxan seems to be better for children with MCNS who are "frequently relapsers" and not as good for "steroid-dependent." Children who are frequent relapsers can go off of prednisone whereas children who are steroid-dependent relapse when they try to get off prednisone.
