My son - almost 8 - is presumed to have "minimal change disease." Medically speaking, he is "steroid-dependent" (when we try to taper him off, he relapses). He has been on coticosteroid for the past 14+ months. We tried Cytoxan for 10 weeks starting early Aug 2007; he still relapsed about 3 weeks ago.
Apparently, some kids are able to take breaks between steroid courses - before the relapse strikes. If such relapses WITH breaks happen frequently, those kids are termed "frequent relapsers" but NOT "steroid-dependent"
I have read some of literature at www.pubmed.org
Based on my reading, kids - in general - who are "frequent relapsers" tend to benefit from a course of "cytoxan" therapy. (I am just sharing what I read...not offering medical advice)
