Posted by CarolS I've found your site because one of the ongoing symptoms that she's had is protein leak from her kidneys. She's taking lisinopril to reduce the spill. I've been active in an ARPKD forum for years and have yet to run across another child with Rita's symptoms. All of the tests that Rita has had to determine the cause of the protein spill have indicated that the glomerular cells are responsible. In ARPKD patients, the tubules are affected not glomeruli. Also, Rita is a twin and when she was born, the doctor noted that her placenta was more than twice the size of her sister's placenta. From what I read about nephrotic syndrome, the symptoms seem to fit Rita's case much better than the ARPKD diagnosis--except she does not appear to have swelling. What I'm curious to know is how kidneys with nephrotic syndrome appear on ultrasound. Rita has had several ultrasounds and her kidneys have changed in appearance over the years and don't appear totally normal. She does not have enlarged kidneys but they are echogenic. If anyone knows where I can learn more about typical imaging results from nephrotic kidneys or kidneys affected with other glomerular diseases, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

Hi,
I'm new to this message board. My daughter, Rita, was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease shortly after birth. She is now 4.5 but many of her symptoms do not fit the classical PKD pattern. Her doctors now question her original diagnosis but a better one has not been offered.
