Surface temps were 73-75F this weekend and bottom temps were a constant 67F in the 70-80’ range. We are now in September. Yes, that time of the year that we say is the best month for diving in NJ — warm water and cooler air temps. We had several wetsuit divers on board this weekend and all were very comfortable in the water. Time to get out diving somewhere!
If you want to go diving on the Tuna Seazure, please call the shop at 610-631-2288 to book your spot. Only takes 4 people to sign up for the boat to run. Sea Bass is open until 9/6, Fluke is open until 9/27.
And now, back to our regular scheduled dive report……
Saturday, August 30th: Everybody was excited to get out today, but nobody was more excited than Capt. Bill. He had a boatload of eager divers aboard . He barely had the engines running and was on his way out of the slip….leaving his confused crew (me) standing on the dock.
On to the diving….sea conditions were nice on the way out to a wooden wreck. Unfortunately, the swells created by Cristobol had reduced bottom vis to 2-4’ and with the exception of an 8oz sinker, not much was seen or came up. For our 2nd dive, we opted for a wreck with some relief and had much better vis on the high parts of the wreck and much better luck in the seafood department. Boated were our limit of Tog and some nice sea bass. Unfortunately, no fluke were seen and only little lobsters were present, but I was still able to get a nice 5 lb’er back on the boat. Interesting side note, a diver spotted a Mahi hanging under the boat, but he had a malfunctioning spear gun and it lived to swim another day.
Sunday, August 31st: The marine forecast for Sunday was like asking everyone what the viz or temp was on the bottom---depending who you asked, you got varying reports. Capt Bill decided we would figure it out at the dock. The flags at the dock were not moving too much, but it was a different story on the ocean. We decided to try and hit the Mohawk for something strong to tie into and hope for better vis than the day before. It was bumpy on the way out, but manageable. Once tied up, you hardly noticed the 3-4’ seas and the wind calmed down as the morning went to what was actually forecasted. First divers up reported seeing the wreck from 30’ and had 20’ vis on the bottom. Not all divers aboard today were hunters, so the catch was limited to a bunch of lobsters and some Tog. Lots of fluke were seen, but none were brought up.
Monday, September 1st: Another day of which forecast do you believe, but none of them sounded particularly great , but wind out of the SW 10-15 should be ok to get some kind of diving in today. Once at the dock, there was barely a breeze. Out on the ocean? Barely a 5 kt breeze and 1’ chop. Knowing we had great conditions on the Mohawk the previous day, we decided to head out there again and were not disappointed. Almost a duplicate of the previous day’s bottom conditions with a better result on catching stuff. Again lots of fluke spotted, but today some really nice flatties were boated. Sea Bass and a bunch more lobsters rounded out today’s catch. Several cool-looking artifacts were also brought up.
Something that DIDN'T come back up from the Mohawk was my pole spear which is grey fiberglass and has a brass clip on it, so please let me know if anybody finds it. This also may be an excuse to upgrade to a speargun
Just in case the subliminal message above didn't work.....if you want to go diving on the Tuna Seazure, please call the shop at 610-631-2288 to book your spot. The boat will run any day we can get at least 4 people to sign up.
