Eagle's Nest cave dive entrance in one straight shot
Posted by Dan Wright on 1/16/2014, 7:04 pm
In a demonstration of a way to enter the Eagle's Nest cave system, I mounted a GoPro onto the scooter looking back at myself. Illustrating how a CCR diver must quickly add gas to his counter lungs, drysuit, BCD and equalize his ears very rapidly. My free left hand does all this, while the right controls the scooter's direction and speed. At the very end of this video, I am headed straight down, it's not evident in the picture because of the camera perspective is locked onto the scooter mount. 0-90' in just a few seconds..........By the way, I edited the video and added in a reverse angle of my POV looking straight down at the end.
is it possible to do this with doubles or is it only rebreathers at this point - what is the minium wattage of lamps that you take - is there a standard? -what scooter r you using that you can control it with only one hand - mine seems to have a mind of its own
thanxs bm
Re: what level of certification does one need to do this....
Hi Bart, there are many more open circuit divers than closed diving in any cave system, it's just a matter of how far you can penetrate and how long. I have seen guys with singles go in, but they stay in the cavern area, as the cave starts at about 200'. I had two primary lights, the one you see burning on my left is a 50 watt HID, and I had a 1300 lumens LED as my second primary. Two 2 watt LED helmet lights, and two 3 watt backup lights in my thigh pockets rounded out the arsenal. The helmet lights I turned off at the mound at 130', and just used a single 50 watt HID. I own the Submerge Viper, maybe your tether is not the right length? If control is a problem? With cave diving we get lots of practice time because we venture thousands of feet using scooters. By and large, the Viper is the most popular scooter I see in the cave systems, almost all DPV's are lithium driven now, SLA are a thing of the past. As for certifications: To penetrate the cave you need to be Full Cave certified and I highly recommend tri-mix, as this cave is deep, I reached 265' max in the upstream section, the downstream goes as far as 310'. You will reach 200' in minutes, easily.
