Thursday 7/19 A little spot Capt Bill had numbers for After a 25 minute run south we were on site and dropped down to find pretty good conditions 58* and maybe 20+ viz. This would be a small snag, but fish were abundant and a couple bugs would be had. Considering the size of the snag it was decided to give another wreck a shot and see if we could do better by the cooler anyway. With the ominous weather forecast for Friday and Saturday a heading towards home port was decided. As it turns out the weather would get worse a little earlier than expected, a solid 20+ knot wind would get the sea going pretty darn good and a confusing sea at that. East wind and a south current made for an interesting boarding at the end of our dives. All in all great to get the day in. Half dozen Fluke nothing too big, a load of Sea Bass (from an un-likely source LOL........not trying to start anything AB) and a couple decent bugs would round things out.
Friday and Saturday big east wind blow as expected
Sunday 7/22 With no one willing to choose, back to the reef for some hunting One of our more productive sites of late would be our destination today. I had some reservations about viz because of the big blow, but was surprised to find decent viz on the top of the wreck. I was greeted by the largest (for the lack of a better word) pod of Tog I have ever seen and really big ones at that, as well as a very big group of Triggers. The sand (where the fluke have been) was not as great as there was swell/current that had the bottom stirred up pretty good. Bottom temp was 65* and 75* on the hang (hang viz was well over 30+ ft) A couple Triggers would be the only catch today due to some mis-information about the opening of Tog Season. Speaking of which I was inches away from a New Jersey citation fish! Turns out that published opening dates were amended recently and Tog opened on 7/17 to a one per angler limit. I would have had more positives to report for today but the loss of all those missed Tog (everyone on board saw them) was just too much of a let down. We had scheduled Tog Fest to start Friday, but that seems to have changed. Anyone wanting to eat some Blackfish for supper should call the shop today and schedule a trip. Capt Bill has several very good Tog locations in his GPS that should produce some very fine specimens.
