Re: Tuna Report 7/19
Posted by Brian K on 7/24/2012, 8:05 am, in reply to "Re: Tuna Report 7/19" With little fanfare, the NJ Div. of Fish and Wildlife moved the reopening of the blackfish season up 10 days from July 27 to July 17. The limit is still one fish, but it now runs until Nov. 15 instead of closing on Aug. 31. The reason for the early opening is the ASMFC reduced the harvest reduction target from 53 percent to 39 percent. The lowering of the harvest reduction came after the ASMFC discovered errors made in the 2011 stock assessment update which overestimated earlier fishing mortality rates. The one-fish limit remains in place until Nov. 15 then goes to six for the season running from Nov. 16 to Dec. 31. The previous bag limit for that segment of the season had been four fish.
