Thursday 6/7 South to one of our favorite little producers A boat load of hunters today with fish and bugs on their minds. After a short 20 minute ride we were on site and getting right to business. Again very warm temps 58*-59* would be the consensus. Viz was good at maybe 15-20 ft and much brighter on dive 2. We would again fill the cooler to overflowing. A dozen bugs or so, 2 very nice fluke in the 5-6 lb range (taken by knife not gun), 2 trigger fish, a load of Sea Bass again and 2 Cod (one being very nice at maybe 5 lbs) I find it amazing to find fish I associate with so different types of conditions. Triggers as a warm water species and Cod as a cold water species? Just one more thing to add to this wacky season of hunting. All this and back nice and early to beat the traffic.
Saturday 6/9 Hankins This was not our original destination which had someone fishing on it when we got close But it would not disappoint. pretty good viz maybe 10-15 ft and warm temps again ~58* A load of Sea Bass (which seems to be the norm lately) a couple lobsta's and a very cool siting. While shooting some Sea Bass and swatting away the doggies, I noticed the doggies took off kinda sudden like. I turned around to see my first non-dogfish shark in Jersey waters. I estimated the Thrasher to be about 5 foot with a tail at least that long. I found a new vim and vigor to my plodding dive style today and was able to make good time in getting back to the boat....the whole time "holding" my stringer rather than leaving it attached as usual.......Made for some good fun aboard when I got back. As much as I was concerned during my dive I look back at it as an awesome siting to add to my dive catalog. I'm certain my head will swivel a little more than usual for a couple dives. Even with a late start we got back early to every one's delight.
No pics today (my kingdom to have had a go pro during my siting)!
As Usual: DIVE SAFE/ DIVE OFTEN
Have some interest in Thursdays and Fridays going forward and for some off shore stuff as well. You all know the routine, call and let us know where ya wanna go. We get enough we go! @610-631-2288
In digging into my siting I found that Thresher Sharks are a very common shark species for NJ waters and the 60* water temps and wrecks are key components in drawing them in. Although usually associated with deeper waters Thresher Sharks have been spotted in-shore for birthings, matings and for hunting when the pickings are scarce off-shore. Based upon my observation of a 5 foot body length with a tail about the same length an estimate of weight might be in the 150-250 pound range. Looking back what a great thing to have seen!
