Hurricane Bill will be east of NJ on early Sunday morning according to the latest NOAA maps. Will this affect boat diving off of NJ this weekend (Sunday in particular)or will the hurricane be too far east to impact diving? Thanks in advance for your responses.

The National Weather Service is calling for 5-8' seas Saturday and Sunday. I would think with this info that it would be a good weekend to stay on terra firma. Conditions will improve starting on Monday, NWS calling for 2-3' seas.

Not to worried at this point over the hurricane. It'll be like riding an elevator on the ocean, long period swells. The wind may not help. Don't know what the vis might be like. But to early to forget about diving this weekend. Capt Bill

Sorry Guys,I didn't want to sound pessimitic. I just don't enjoy rolling around the deck in swells. I like to think of diving as "enjoyable".

From past experience, unless there is wind involved, the long period swells shouldn't be a factor except for the capt's at the inlets. However those long period swells go deep, very deep and there usually is a very significant surge and bottom vis is generally on the order of 10' and less. The good side of all this is that it will mix the thermocline and I would expect bottom temps to be in the mid 60's. Once the silt settles down in about a week, barring any more offshore disturbances and swells you can expect some of the best vis of the season. Generally in the order of 40'+ along with the warm temps..

Well as Capt. Dan posted, offshore i'm sure we could have, would have dove. But we were to dive inshore and it's very hard if not impossible the day before to change the depth to a much deeper wreck. Although the boat was bought to run the offshore stuff and do the canyons. The tunaseazure is now mostly a "shallow dive boat". I've run the deep trips and at this point I must admit we're the "shallow sea detectives". I dive mostly the things I enjoy most, old junk piles. I'm a brass junkie that just loves to do battle once in a while with a critter or two. Dan made the right call peek out and take a look. Dive if he felt the conditions were decent. However I feel I made the right call as well. We were to dive 80ft. I felt the surge and vis at that depth would be horible. So we didn't go. Now, hopefully come thursday through Sunday the conditions will be way changed and we can all enjoy some nice diving. I always love hitting inshore wrecks after a good blow, never know how things will be changed. If ya want to go see and do some diving call the shop. 610 631 2288 Capt Bill

Bill, you made the right call.Inshore 80 ft. would have been terrible vis,and probably bad surge.I took the shot and told the group if the surge was too strong and the vis was zero,we would turn around and no$$$$ due Capt.Dan

Two diferent choices both right. Always a problem making the call. Customers look at there computer see the forecast and assume it's always right, and base they're thoughts on what it says. When you spend time on the water like many of us do you realize just how many things enter into staying at the dock or running. Capt. Bill

Both you guys made the right choice. A low lying wreck would have been crap and a high one like the Stolt was good as long as you stayed off the bottom. Out of Barnegat the only 2 choices would be the Great Isaac and the GT Stern. I think the Resor would have been crap for such a far run unless the divers stayed up top near the deck gun and I think most like to lobster and scallop when they go out there. It's nice to see you guys making a call and willing to cancel even though the top side conditions were great. I still remember the old days when the boat went out regardless and the capts saying I can't control what's on the bottom even though they knew it would be crap. It usually takes 10 to 12 days to recover 100% barring any more disturbances but this weekend should be great, weather permitting. I'm waiting to hear what the bottom conditions are this Sat and Sun. I would think bring your camera and wetsuit.

Glenn,I went out today offshore in 230ft. of water.Top was gin clear down to 80 ft. At the bottom was only 5 ft. Worse condition I have seen on that wreck. This weekend should be good. Capt.Dan

I'm not surprised even at that depth. Those swells were long period which means they went deep. It really sucks to make a run like that only to have the conditions you experienced. However a good mixing is needed and the sacrifice of a weeks diving is a small price to pay for what "should" be some of the best diving Jersey has to offer. Unfortunately I see a tropical disturbance forming and forecasted to be in our backyard by the weekend. It may just be enough to keep the bottom vis kicked up. Let's hope for the best.

Yup....those first couple of days after a hurricane sweeps by.....you'll never forget them, that's for sure. Going down the grapple (or the buoy line) and the captain tells us that we're in 85-ish feet of water. Going down the line in crystal clear water until around 70-75' or so and then it goes to coffee....on the black side. Next thing you know you're on the bottom. Can't see it but sure can feel it. That's what those surface rollers do....they reach on down and lift the bottom up into the water column. Takes a little while for it to all settle back down.

I've been out in sweels big enough all you could see in the trough was water as they bore down on you. Really not a big deal at all way better then a decent wind chop. The real probelem with swells is what they can do to the bottom. Surge can be an issue as well as vis. All that said I'll decide wheter We're leaving the dock tomorrow. I've actually enjoyed swells like the ones forecasted, like an amusement ride. But all that said it's the wind that really concerns me. South wind at a decent clip and the swells well like I said we'll see what tomorrow brings. Capt Bill
