- Is a single tank equipped with an H-Valve considered acceptable redundancy
Posted by bartman on 7/2/2009, 3:10 pm Moonsnail Master
I recently saw a different type tank set up during a dive - the individual had an H-valve set up on a single tank with two complete sets of regulators (1st and 2nd stages) - i can see how the second reg is redundant to the 1st regulator but when there is a need for an alternate air source dont you need a second tank? could not one of the 1st stages go bad and bleed out the only air source? - am i incorrect or just over thinking the situation? that is all the bartman- mosb

For the purposes of "technical diving/training" it is. NAUI Tech training calls for the use of doubles or a single tank with an H valve. Air share and use of 1/3's being the bailout for same and running out of air being frowned upon. Do I agree? I believe it can have its place and purpose in shallow diving (inlets....railroad bridge..... training) Personally.....I dive doubles or w/ a pony.

A burst disc is what you get from lugging doubles around.

For those who don't know what an H-valve looks like:
If one reg begins a free flow I would hope that the diver is very flexible so that the one bad reg can be shut down. If not, what good is the second reg if it's attached to an out of air source???? The H-valve makes no sense to me.

I think that the greatest point of failure is by far the regulators. So IMHO 2 regulators on an h-valve is a pretty good way to go for dives where one tank makes sense. I have thought about it as a good way to alternate between doubles and a single tank without having to reconfigure hoses each time. But,I never got around to buying an h-valve and now I only have doubles so, no need. You could also carry a stage bottle with 50% in it which you could use at 70 feet. This could serve as further redundancy and as deco. JPB
