    I had one for about 4 years. It takes about a year to get the biological filter "broken in" to where the fish can survive more than a month or so. I would start off with only a few fish. If your purchasing fish, go with inexpensive fish such as Damsels. Frequent (1/3 tank per month) water changes are also a must. As far as the bottom, go with crushed coral and an undergravel filter. Also use a canister filter.

    It takes a long time and alot of work to get the tank at a point to sustain marine fish. It was fun for me but then the kids came along and I had less time (and money) to keep it up. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
