Our day started off with a bit of engine trouble which delayed our departure and affected our choice of destination. We originally intended to head for the Gulf Trade Stern but figured we should stay a little closer to home. As we broke the inlet we had a calm sea with some low swell. We headed first for the Persephone but heard someone was already on her so we set a course for the NW barges (main part). As we headed off the fog started to get pretty heavy. By the time we got closer to the wreck my RADAR picked up a target in the vicinity. We slowly approached and confirmed, again someone was already on the wreck. they were fishing her so we opted to head to another barge a bit further offshore. Same story... I figured with the thick fog we may not have had as much competition, wrong. We ended up running off to a larger wreck about 12 miles out in 85'. Finally a free wreck but the fog was still thick. We decided to delay diving operations until the fog burned off. As the fog started to lift we were preparing to grapnel when a huge freighter appeared not far off our bow. No danger but close enough to remind us how dangerous the fog can be. We had about 20' vis with a cold 47deg bottom temp. Plenty of large seabass to be had if you wanted but not too many lobsters. We stayed for two dives and came back with 2 bugs and about 5 large bass for 3 divers. I expect our numbers to get better as the season progresses... The boat ran well and we enjoyed a nice following sea for the ride home. A good day for our second trip of the season.
