Today I was joined on the Lady Godiver by Jeff, ------ and Jack. We figured since it was our last chance for Blackfish before the spring season shut down we better try for some. We went to our favorite Tog wreck about 14 miles out of Barnegat. As Jack just got a new dry suit he did not dive with a spear but figured he would just try to get used to the suit. ----- dove with two guns and of course being prepared for battle came up with no fish. Both Jack and ------ told me about the massive amount of big tog on the wreck. I quickly suited up and jumped over the side (with my gun). ON the way down I passed Jeff who had a limit of huge tog. I was soon on the wreck and could see some nice tog just out of shooting distance. I stalked one and it was soon trying to swim with my spear buried just behind the gill plate. I quickly put her on the stringer and looked for another big one. I swam around and looked in all the usual places but could not find another big one so I ended up with one big tog and a couple of smaller ones about 5 to 6 lbs. Next we were headed to another wreck a little more intact that is also known as a tog magnet. This time it was not to be. Only small tog on this one. No one even took a shot and instead ----- recovered an anchor and sinkers, Jack and Jeff toured the wreck as best as possible and I lastly went in and did a little tour, looked at all the anchors and grapples snagged on the wreck and brought up loads of sinkers. The vis on both wrecks was about 10 to 15ft. Bottom temp was 45 on the first (65 to 70 ft ) and 43 on the second (82 ft). The surface was pretty calm but there was a swell which pushed us around pretty good on the bottom.Very nice day on the water and I finally am starting to refill my freezer with fish after loosing most of my frozen fish in the hurricane last year when the electric was off for several weeks.
