We had planned on the Gulf trade and Sea Hag but due to circumstances beyond our control we ended up staying close in. Today it Dan Lieb and myself diving and Glen Andyson at the wheel.
Our first stop was on a small commercial fishing boat in about 70 ft. This wreck has been a consistent producer but let us down big time. This time only a couple of lobster, fluke and sea bass. Generally this wreck is lousy with fish but there were very few there today. Vis was about 25 and the bottom temp still seemed to be mid 50s.
Next stop was loaded with fishing boats so we went a little further offshore to about 70 ft to hit another small fishing boat wreck? This one has some fish and lobster but not the amount we expected. Its a very small snag and Dan reports that most of its still there.
Next to a wooden wreck in the same area. Hey I got to jump in first as I did not go in on the second stop. As I checked the hook I found it had scared a lobster out of its hole, first bug. Next I swim over to another piece and there is a line of holes with good lobsters in each one. Twelve minutes into my dive i am back at the boat with a limit of lobster. I let Dan know that I only hit about 30 ft of the wreck and he jumps in and scores well on the lobster too.
From here we head in and find a fishing boat on the next wreck so we head in little further to a broken up metal barge in about 45 ft . Still good vis once we get under the algae bloom. Some nice fluke and sea bass. I try to shoot one fluke and he gets away. I check my spear tip and find it has broken off just below the barb. Dan and I still manage to get several fish.
Lastly just outside the surf I jump in on a beach wreck and pole spear a bunch of triggers and another fluke.
We wanted more fish today but Dan and I (the only two diving today) got our limits of lobster and lots of fish. Really nice surface conditions and a fun day.
