An emergency closure of the recreational fishery for black sea bass in federal waters goes into effect Monday, October 5th.
The closure applies to all federal waters north of Cape Hatteras, NC, for 180 days because data showed recreational fisherman could have caught more than double their annual quota by the end of the year with out a moratorium.
Landing data shows recreational fisherman have reached their quota and could exceed their 1.14 million pounds harvest limit by as much as 84 to 225 percent, had the fishery not been closed.
