A 16-foot Cuvier's beaked whale beached itself on the 68th street beach in Brant Beach yesterday.
Carrying an estimated weight of 3,000 pounds, the whale died after a rescue team from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine arrived at the beach, said Bob Schoelkopf. The whale will be transported later today to the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for testing.
Schoelkopf said the incident is only the second time in the last 30 years that a Cuvier's whale has beached itself in New Jersey. In December, a True's beaked whale washed up dead in Beach Haven.
No name or address to identify this poor creature was found.
