Finally got into the water today and things look pretty good. I dove a small spot about seven miles out of Manasquan Inlet: 87' deep, 49 degrees on the bottom, 61 degrees at the 20' hang, could see the bottom at 64' and viz was maybe 5 to 10'. Lots of sea bass (grabbed two by hand, 13 and 16 inches), two bugs that looked a little small so I didn't bother with them, a couple of ling, crabs. Nice day.
With the price of diesel being what it is ($4.659/gal today) I've drastically cut back on the power and it's paying off dividends. By running the Caterpillar 3208 at 1500 rpm instead of the usual 2150, I'm saved about 36% on fuel this year. We go about 2.5 knots slower, but on a day when we cover, say, 20 nautical miles, I save about $27 in fuel. Takes a little longer to get there, but it doesn't bother us at all with the savings. Conservation is the answer for the price rape that we are dealing with.
