Wow, what a weekend!!!
Saturday, June 7th we had Scuba Connection on the boat. There were quite a few people doing their Tri-mix and Tec-Deep training on the Algol. This wreck site makes a great training site for this.
When we left the dock at 7:00am winds were light and we had favorable forecast. We headed out to almost Lake Atlantic conditions. Seas were around 2 to 3 foot and the Gypsy Blood was cruising in all her glory. As we made our way to the wreck site, we started catching up to the fog. When we arrived on-site I could see that the fog was not going to be around long as it was already burning off.
Mike went in to do the tie in and shortly it was pool open. Since training classes going in, everyone took their time getting in. Jason and Wayne run a very organized class.
No matter how hard I tried to have someone bring me up a lobster, no one did. I guess they decided to pay attention to their instructor.
After lunch the wind picked up a little, but nothing really bad. The vis on the wreck was reported to be around 30 feet which is great for this time of year. Bottom temp was around 46 ( @145 feet) and the surface temp around 55. Not bad for the first of June.
The ride back was a little bumpy, but that was nothing the wall of heat we hit as we approached the inlet. Wow, 100 degrees. This was one time I was glad I was just driving the boat and did not have to unload dive gear.
Sunday June 8th we had Hunterdon Scuba on board for a trip to the Beth Dee Bob. At the last minute everyone wanted to change to the Stolt and off we went. We pulled out of the dock at 7:00am and turned for the railroad bridge. With nothing moving but the outbound current it was a very pleasant ride out to the inlet. As I approached the mouth of the inlet we were created with flat calm seas, with the autopilot set I sat back, relaxed and enjoyed a moment alone on bridge and just wondered how lucky I am. I am Dive Boat Captain and I get to do this on day like this.
We arrived on site about 8:10am and Brian went to do the tie in. I was hoping that I dropped the shot line right though the sky light as usual. I could see that Brian was moving the chain, so I guess I missed the sky light. It was pool open. After everyone started coming back, they were reporting 46 degrees on the bottom and 59 on the top with 30 foot of vis. I wish I not forgotten by dry suit at home, I would have like to seen how much this wreck is changing. They were reporting that bridge is starting to collapse, I only think of the possibility is new areas to explore this wreck. Maybe next time.
After chilling out and enjoying lunch it was time to head back in. We could not have enjoyed a nicer day, nice breeze, flat seas and good company.
Brian went to untie and to try and find my son a nice birthday present (the kid loves lobsters), but it seems that it wasn’t to be today.
So with all of the customers on board we picked up Brian and off we went for the inlet. On the way back we passed the Jeanne II who was sitting on the Algol. So with a blast of the horn, off we were for the dock. And once again, we hit the wall of heat as we entered the inlet. The one good thing is that it was high tide, so the off load was easy. Thanks again to the Hunterdon Scuba group for making the day enjoyable.
Saturday the 14th, we have Blue Water Diver and Elite Divers on for a trip to the Maurice Tracey. You may contact them directly; Blue Water Divers at 201-327-2822 or Elite Divers at 973-586-2214
Sunday the 15th, Father Day Open boat. This will be for all of the fathers looking to get out for the day. I am thinking about an Arundo trip. If you have not been to this wreck it is one of the best wreck sites in the Mud Hole area. Please sign up on the WEB or contact me at 973-949-4599.
