Doug Card and I drove over to Dutch Springs yesterday to do the third and final quarry trial of the soviet Protei-5 DPV that I renovated over the winter and to shoot more video, due to more requests for footage on youtube. This time we were greeted by bright sun, and I had the dual 400 watt lights to help illuminate the all black scooter. I did three runs with the scooter, spending over 1 1/2 hous using it. Batteries still strong, went from 13.2 volts to 11.8 after all the use. I ran into two divers, Mike and Shawn from Dudas Diving Duds and they had submerge UV 18s. I got Mike to go around the platforms with me on my final dive, as there has not been a side by side run with a high preformance DPV yet. Mike was wearing a single tank, and I had my LP 95 doubles, so I had alot more drag, but the Protei-5 did keep up with the UV 18. On the first dive, Doug shot video of me racing around the platforms again. The Protei does generate a lot of questions, but I think of it as as an old muscle car, not practical, not tight cornering, but loud and very fast, sort of like an old '68 GTO!
Dive safe and often..
-Dan
