"What happened when Mel Fisher found the Atocha and brought it back to port"
He had the legal fight of his life. The Feds and the state of Florida wanted it without ever lifting a hand or a dollar bill in the effort to locate and salvage the Atocha: "Mel's dream almost came to a complete halt when the U.S. Government and the State of Florida laid claim to the wreck and it appeared that the treasure he and his family had worked so hard to recover would never be theirs. After legal battles that would take over 8 years to resolve and cost the Fishers over $4 million in legal fees, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a landmark decision, would finally grant Mel and his family complete ownership of the Atocha wreck and its treasures." Story of Mel Fisher
Did the article say what waters the unnamed wreck/treasure was found in?? Since a Florida judge is involved I would say that it was found in Florida waters. Spain has no claim to it whatsoever. It was down there how many years and Spain did nada to find it. They do not deserve even 5 pasetas of the treasure.
