The B&LE already owned 14 ex-DM&IR SD-9's, but needed additional motive power during a 1971 shortage. 6 SD-38AC's were built new and numbered 864-869. The 6 SD-9's were repainted into B&LE paint and renumbered 835-840. The units were unique for a while in that they retained their Missabe fuel tank setup, and they were stenciled "leased from DM&IR" in white on the engineer's side battery box. Eventually, the units were purchased by the B&LE and that stencile was removed and the double fuel tanks were installed.
In most leases, renumbering is uncommon. I have a picture of (I'm pretty sure about this but don't quote me) 720A leading an empty ore jenny train somewhere on the road and it had no Missabe alterations.
