Interesting question. There would have been a few different ways. One would be to take the GN, NP, SOO, or CNW down to Mpls/St Paul and take either the GN Empire Builder or NP Main Streeter (?) to Washington State and go south from there. Or go down to Mlps/St Paul and take the CB&Q, SOO, CNW, or MILW to Chicago and the UP or Santa Fe west. There might have been a direct link from the Twin Ports to Chicago, but I'm not sure. I think the most likely would be the Twin Ports - Twin Cities - Chicago - San Fran.
