Posted by arcturusmine Here's a shot from Terraserver. http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=15&X=653&Y=6576&W=2 I'm saying more than I know, but it appears that mine might have started out as an underground operation as the 1939 map shows a shaft on the property just south of the main ore body. It is possible that the early open pit mining used the shaft to lift the ore to the surface, as the open pit operation appears to be underway by 1939. Drop a line on OreRail at Yahoo groups. There are a few others can tell you more than I know. Todd

Was able to do a little more digging. There is a Helmer Mine on the east side of Kinney. The Missabe had a line that ran up to service that operation. Can't speak for the operation of the mine itself, but it is shown on maps from 1939 and 1959. In 1939, the line cames directly off the branch coming from Sherwood. In 1959, the Missabe would need to traverse over part of the GN main to Virginia. It also appears that the GN also used part of the line to access a mine that they served in the area.
