For almost thirty years now, one of the best tournaments held in S.W. Ohio is the Worth “Memorial” Tournament. This event remembers and honors former softball people who have passed on, often prematurely.
This year’s 29th Annual Worth/USSSA “Memorial” Tournament will be held at multiple locations across S. W. Ohio, including Dayton’s Kettering Field, Springfield’s Davey Moore and Lagonda Parks, Sidney’s Flanagan Park, Warren County’s Armco Park, and Beavercreek’s Rotary Park. The event is scheduled for May 23-24 (using May 25 only in case of rain).
This long-standing event hosts multiple categories of play, including in 2009 a Men’s B-C NIT, a Men’s D&E bracket with advancement from round-robin play for all teams, and a Mixed Couples/Co-Ed division.
The format for the Men’s D & E category of play is five games of round-robin play followed by double elimination championships rounds for all teams in each flight. 1st & 2nd will play in the competitive championships; 3rd and 4th will play off in the D/E-Upper division; and 5th and 6th will face off in the D/E-Lower. Plan is for all these teams to get no less than 7 games.
The Men’s B-C NIT will be three-game elimination format. The Mixed Couples Division format will depend upon the total number of entrants.
As always, a large prize package will be offered with Division winner awards and championship awards in each category of play.
Round-robin sites include Dayton’s Kettering Field Complex (B-C NIT; Mixed Couples); Lebanon’s Armco Park (Men’s D & E); Beavercreek’s Rotary Park (Men’s D & E); Springfield’s Davey Moore Park and Lagonda Park (Men’s D & E); Fairborn’s Fairfield Park (Men’s D & E); and Sidney’s Flanagan Park (Men’s D & E). Championship rounds will conclude at Kettering Field (3rd vs. 4th), Armco Park (1st vs 2nd), and Fairfield Park (5th vs 6th).
Entry fee in 2009 is $295 for the C-E portion of the event, $275 for the B-C NIT, and $250 for mixed couples and Worth softballs are provided. This makes the event one of the best bargains in softball, too.
Memorial honorees in 2009 include: Max Hillsamer, Beavercreek; Roy Copeland, Dayton; Casey Terrell, Xenia; Bill Stout and Dale Ratliff, Springfield. As is our tradition, presentations to families and friends will be made at various Memorial Tournament sites. This year’s family & friends ceremonies are scheduled for 11am at Davey Moore Park in Springfield for Bill Stout and Dale Ratliff; 1pm at Rotary Park in Beavercreek for Max Hillsamer; and 3pm at Kettering Field in Dayton for Roy Copeland.
