I made a little mistake. I looked at the pictures I took of the family mourning brooch. It turns out there were purple grapes alternating with white and green leaves around the brooch with inner bluish stones around the brooch as well. No amethyst stones themselves. Just purple grapes. Sorry for the first misleading comment! I should look at the pictures first before I made my comment! But still it's a mourning brooch with the picture of my great-grandpa. That was because he died so young. He was only 28. His wife, my great-grandma, also died young at the age of 26 two years after his death. Both of them died of preventive diseases in the early part of the 1918 pandemic, I suspect. He in 1914 and she in 1916 (who likely died of additional problems from childbirth as well as that pandemic disease). His own mother later died of the disease in 1918. Some other members of that family also died young as well likely from the pandemic diseases. But it seems there was no mourning brooch made of my great-grandma.
