BLE Update- Damage has shown up!
Posted by Tom in PA on January 12, 2018, 4:24 pm
My Sand Live Oak still has many green leaves. We hit -5 in this last cold snap and we were below freezing for a couple of weeks. It was 65 today but back down again My BBB is half burned. Can you tell which side gets the wind? Victoria looks better but the spot is warmer and more protected. Iím thinking of adding another this Spring. Hope everyone is warm and well! Winter will end someday

Wow! Damage is showing up quickly. I haven't had a chance to check for my damage yet, but I'm not feeling overly optimistic with the next cold wave coming this weekend.

A frost cloth might go a long way.

Great to see that Sand Live Oak doing so well. Thanks for doing a trial on that tree Tom. Ive got to get one and I really like your Magnolia x Victoria. I think I can get one of those nearby. Thanks for sharing and some good pics.

Don't feel bad. Although my mags are fine (for now) I have a couple Camellias that look burned on the sunny side of the plants. Kevin midTN

I got that on a couple of mine from the first freeze we had back in November. The temperature had not been below freezing here yet at that point. Then, this front comes through and drops our temperature below freezing for the first time. It dropped the temperature, not to 30, or even 25, but 19 degrees. I believe the resulting damage could be attributed to the fact that the plants had not hardened off at that time. Don't worry about the camellia leaf damage, the new growth will come out in late April and early May and all will look good again.

Oh wow! Those poor Magnolias! The ones in Harlan looked fine this week during the warm spell but I expect some significant shedding like we had in 2015, especially with more 0s coming again I have not quite been as cold as you. I hope everything survives for you!
