13* with Lake Effect Snow

Fairly rare to have lake effect snow around here as its more common in the Smoky Mountains east of here and the Eastern Ky areas, especially West Virginia. These temps will just not lighten up! Looking for relief and back to normals by Sunday - Normal on this day in winter here : 27* lo 47* hi

No snow but it ws 14 this morning. Ridiculous temps for so long a spell. MY lows down here have been similar to yours. We hav hit 14 three times and 11F once! hope my palms ar ok. I have never had to worry about protection, but I am wondering if this might not have been a good idea this year. So far my marginal Trichocereus and Echinopsis genus Cacti have fared ok. MY tree-like Opuntia gome 'Old MExico' is drooping a lot. IT is tree-like now. The top branches are bending over a lot I hope it is ok. IT is common for some Opuntia to shrivel in the cold, etc, but this one does not. I guess it is because it is subtropical. Time will tell the story. Keeping my fingers crossed. My Opuntia ellisiana looks great, no drooping etc. IT is subtropical as well.

Fred so far most all of my South Carolina agaves are looking good and are under porch cover but not exposed to precipitation. My agave Parryi is doing great planted out in these temps and has a flower pot covering in a very good drainage bed. Just like you thought, survivable in my climate and this is about as bad as it gets! Hope your cacti genius and Opuntia species continue to fare well. Its almost over but the "duration" has been brutal! btw - the photo attached was taken yesterday afternoon here by a local paper after schools shut down, Schools remain closed here and also in a couple more plateau counties.

Looks like one more cold night, NOAA is saying 6F tomorrow morning for me, they had me at 8F for this AM, got to 9F. No flurries here. Network news would have you think the next ice age has begun in the NE, but having grown up there these kinds of storms happen now and again, been through stuff like that many times in the past, even once here in TN LOL. Schools in Cannon on 2 hour delay yesterday, off today due to heat and water problems. My grandson's school had their HVAC room units replaced last summer so all good there, but a couple other schools had probs, so all are off.

Have you noticed these lows are lowest around 530 or 6am and by 7am it has risen 3 or 4 degrees? There were heavy snow showers near Nashville yesterday like here and didnt know if that was why you grandson's school was closed. The icy snowy event for early next week seems to have almost but evaporated !
Im afraid its . . . . . . . .

LOL. Glad it was farther south than here in Simpsonville. We may get some frozen precip monday morning early for an hour or two, but supposed to go up to 40s so maybe it will not be so bad. I have not tried the guns=d but I know it must be frozen a couple of inches or more. I have never seen the ground frozen here.

If you dont get a wedgie, you should be good to go for a nice winter winter thaw I think they are now downplaying a southern ice event but the ground is frozen here and a cold rain could . . . . I dont want to think about that right now jajaja
