A. gracilipes has been his best survivor and he kept an ovatifolia alive a few years before it rotted. None of the cold hardy western species that work for me survived for him. But drainage and size of the plant matter a lot. Also, plant as early in the season as you can. If you ever get rain during winter, then covers during winter rain or planting under the eaves can make a huge difference.
