The Windmill has been in the ground for 3 yrs. Surprisingly, it has very little trunk. I'd estimate about 6 inches. I'm thinking this is the case, because virtually all its fronds have lasted throughout the period, nearly to the ground. None died from cold or frosts. Windmills, if grown as partially deciduous trees, replace, or nearly replace all removed fronds, with all new growth, at the top. This makes the plant develop a taller trunk, faster, because the plant puts all its energy into replacing removed leaves, on top of a bare, or nearly bare trunk.
Also, Bulgarians seem to develop even thinner trunks, over time, than some other T. fortunae strains, for a more dainty look. I think it would grow a bit faster if I removed lower leaves, or if they otherwise died, every year.
