Good question. I searched the entire state of Tennessee for a Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) 2 or 3 years ago and could not find anything.
I contacted Phil in Cali @ Jungle Music to see if they carried them. An associate told me they do not but would ask Phil to check on it for me (He never responded back) and they sell every palm GOD has created, or thought they did - for a price.
The associate told me in the conversation that they are so common (common as weeds) nursuries dont carry them anymore plus they grow so fast and take up so much room that they have become the least desirable to care for.
About 3 or 4 years ago, several of us on this forum individually purchased on-line (I think it was Home Depot via Fast Growing Trees) and we received some very nice 3g palms for cheap and they were almost 5'tall. I planted mine in a bad location but thought I would harvest for winter and plant again next season but they died on me. I wasn't surprised because small W.robusta will do that as they are a little finicky. I've looked in Chattanooga, Murfreesboro, Nashville and Knoxville since and have been unable to find them. (I even searched Miami-Orlando-Atlanta and Memphis areas online, to no avail)
There are options:
* Seed grow some as soon as possible.
* Try searching Monrovia website from Azusa,Cali.
and if they have it, you can buy online and have it shipped free to the nearest nursery in your area that sells Monrovia plant material (For me, there are a few in the midstate) but haven't checked in a while.
* Check with nurseries in Nevada, Arizona or New Mexico.
* Connect with other palm growers in those states.
I love that palm, not quite as hardy as Sabal Palmetto but it has some defining attributes.
* Easy to protect and a little hardier that reported. Mine took subzero several times through the years and just protected with mulch (up and down the trunk) inside a barrel covering. In the end, I was using 2 55-g barrels attached to each other and I never used heat in a 15 year span.
* It can regrow a full crown in one season.
* It can survive easily if crown rot attacks the palm ie: spear pull (I once removed 18" of the crown shaft TWICE in a 15 year period due to spear pull/crown rot, and it lived. I wasn't so lucky on the 3rd attempt.
If you find anything out there, please make a post 'after' your purchase. Good luck Pat.
