The VARIEGATED CHINESE PITTOSPORUM, Pittosporum heterophyllum variegata, is getting ready to bloom! This late winter-early spring bloomer has tiny, but fragrant flowers...

There is a species of this tree that is native to Florida, (Torreya taxifolia). Mail Order Natives will only sell it to those who live in the SE. There is a handfull of other species, belonging to the genus, Torreya. This is a very hardy form of the species. This tree is commonly known as the CHINESE NUTMEG YEW, Torreya grandis. I got this plant from Woodlanders, about 5 years ago. It has not required ANY protection, in any of those years. None of its needles has ever been bronzed, discolored, or fell off. The plant has seem -5F, too. Seems SOLIDLY HARDY, here. It's evergreen, of course. Anybody else growing any form of Torreya?

Unlike points further south, than me, Dutch bulbs, and spring ephemerals, do not bloom, all at once. THEY BLOOM SEQUENTIALLY! Usually, once things begin blooming in my yard, there is no pause. If they begin blooming about 10 days earlier, than usual, as they are, this year (due to above average February temps), the earliest bloomers can remain in bloom, for a month, or more (lack of pollinators). In the pic below, is a true harbinger of spring. This plant was named after the mythological Greek god of beauty and desire. It is called ADONIS, Adonis aestivalis, and check it out, blooming in February, here!

Here are some Snowdrops, Galanthus nivalis, that are blooming, right now! If you look closely, you can even see a bit of its namesake (snow), close by. Late winter snow doesn't deter them. These flowers are very hardy. Cold temps won't discolor them, either.
