Here are a couple of hardy EVERGREEN perennials, growing in my garden. They don't even wince, during and after z6B minimums. They receive no protection, at all. They are: Japanese Sacred Lily, Rohdea japonica, and Barrenwort, Epimedium hybridum spp.. Since they are hardy, and evergreen, anybody else growing them?

Last summer, I planted this Hardy Cinnamon/Camphor Tree, Cinnamomum checkiangense. This is how it came through its first z6 minimum winter. I lifted the styrofoam rose cone from over the Wall o Water, to see how it is doing, so far, this winter. Ian of the Desert Northwest Nursery (used to post here, years ago), discussed this as being hardy enough to grow in his part of Washington State (Sequim, pronounced, "Squim"), unprotected. Here is my plant, in Michigan:

Here's an update on a couple of plants I set out, in early fall 2023. The plant on the left, is a variegated boxwood, Buxus sempervirens variegata. It received NO PROTECTION, but seems to be making it through my slightly below zero temps, quite well. The plant more on the right, is Kunzea 'Badja Carpet'. It has just a styrofoam rose cone covering it, and so far, that seems to be sufficient protection, for this Australia native. Anyone else growing this hardy EVERGREEN plant, in their garden? This form of Kunzea was also discussed, by Ian, as a plant hardy enough to grow, in Sequim, without protection. Needless to say, since he lives in z8, I am using at least a rose cone, to get my plant through a winter, HERE.

This summer bloomer has decided that winter is just as good of a time, as any, to BLOOM. Some of you may be familiar with this plant. it is called MANDEVILLA. This plant can be included with those that don't have to be allowed to be killed by frost, and purchased new, every year.

- NEW PLANT -
Here is a new plant I got today. This is the plant, that the Los Angeles, CA suburb of HOLLYWOOD, was named after, because although the plant not a true holly, it is EVERGREEN, and produces red berries, around Christmas. This plant is a West Coast native, and grows in wild abundance, in Southern California. This plant is commonly called, California Holly, Christmas Berry, or simply, TOYON, Heteromeles arbutifolia. Believe it or not, this plant, although it likes excellent drainage, and is a xeric, it is surprisingly hardy, they say (I haven't tried it here, yet), down to z7 minimums, between a goose egg and 10 degrees. Anybody trying this plant, in the more temperate areas? I have the plant outside, but right next to the greenhouse, in case bitter cold returns...
