Well, maybe, you should not grow them, IF you are only interested in growing plants that are "fully happy", in your zone. Then you would only plant plants that are hardy in a zone or two BELOW your zone, unprotected. No struggle for the plant, then.
In fact, this is why some nursery people (I never listen to them, and often chuckle, to myself, when I over hear them giving advice to customers), try to discourage people from growing certain plants, because they know that UNPROTECTED (many are not familiar with any of these methods), a certain species will struggle or die, outside of its usual area, which ultimately keeps everyone growing pretty much the same things, all over the place, and making everyone's gardens, "carbon copies of each other", or everyone growing anything the local Home Depot or Lowes, sell.
NOT AN INTERSTING garden, in my opinion!
Any damage sustained to the Fatsia, last year, would have likely been avoided, as well, if a tarp was thrown over it, due to that sudden, rapid temperature drop, in your area.
Aucubas, and Oak Leaf Hollies are a few more plants that should be protected, or at least, one should be READY TO PROTECT them, if any winter event, like last year's, should EVER happen again..
