Got home Sunday just in time for Christmas. I got a small camellia plant and sago in Andalusia Alabama and several Sabal Palmetto seedlings and seed in Miramar Beach, Florida. There is this one Sabal palm growing near a store I like to stop at in Panama City Beach that is always loaded with seed and every time Im there in the fall and winter, I grab seed. I have always just tossed the seed when I got back home but this year I'm going to try to find out what the heck it is.
The palm hasn't grown any in the 4 years Ive been watching it and looks like a Sabal Minor but this year I noticed the seeded petioles stayed more upright, close to 45 degrees and higher even when spent where Sabal minor leaves/petioles hug the ground. This mystery palm does have slightly curved costapalmate fronds and that seems similar to Sabal Major (palmetto). Who knows, it might be a hybrid like x Birmingham.
I hope to solve this mystery. (like I have a climate for it)
Thanks Fred.
BTW.
My neighbor is getting her Black Eyed Peas ready
