If you are z6 or above, rather than pot up, and bring indoors, you could have transplanted it to a spot in your yard. It would've survived a normal winter, there, I think. If it were outdoors, it would be "clean" of leaves, by now.
I protected mine, I think, for its first few winters, before it got too wide AND tall to protect. Mine only suffered damage in winters that dipped below -10F (only a couple such years, in the last 20).
