I'm sure it has been colder than that there before. However, that might be a record for that particular date. Places with snow cover got the worst of it. Areas of the coastal plain in Virginia and North Carolina with heavy snow cover went below zero. Even as far south as Greenville NC, it went to 4 below zero early Sunday morning. Places between I95 and Wilmington NC saw single digits also. I'm way up in the northern tip of Virginia and my immediate area bottomed out at zero. It probably would have been worse it we had snow on the ground. Luckily we didn't. The duration of this event was probably more damaging than the actual lows for many people. Yuck!
