YEs, perhaps removing the fronds might increase the size of the trunk. Without doubt I think mine is or will be in a few years the largest Sago in Upstate.
Some years it does only partially brown out. IT never started to brown until the temp hit 13 or so. I do my Sago much like people in the north do their Liriope, I cut the fronds or green art off and start again.
