Fred, that's interesting about the Sago.
It behaves exactly like a semi-evergreen plant does in the North. The fronds, however, don't fall like leaves do, on semi-evergreens, in spring. They have to be manually removed.
We were just discussing the northern bayberry, a few days ago (which, incidentally, is still fully green, after recent z6 lows). There was a comment that the southern variety of bayberry browns faster. Since both northern and southern bayberries SHARE z6 and 7, as hardiness zones, z7 growers should try the northern variety, over the southern variety, for its longer length of greenness.
I can see that the annual removal of Sago fronds would increase trunking speed, though.
