I agree with your thoughts on damage that will show this spring and summer. I have a Hopi Myrtle that has done well unprotected over the previous 2 winters, but I have no idea what to expect when spring arrives. I had a live oak that was over 6 foot tall going into the winter of 2014 that was in the ground for over 10 years. It was killed back to the ground with the extended days of below 0 temps we had then. It did not show any new growth until late June that year and now is only about 3 feet tall. Neither the Myrtle nor the live oak are protected, so I can only hope for the best now.
