some very nice plants to consider. might suggest bergenia cordifolia as a generally hardy but lush and "tropical" looking evergreen perennial. the evergreen forms of magnolia virginiana might be worth considering as well as some of the hardier evergreen viburnums like v. rhytidophyllum and it's hybrids and mahonias like m. aquifolium/"Oregon grape".
