Tony, that's what I would have done. The fronds are huge so you didn't have a choice but to cut them. I do this every fall anyway and the plant is always able to recover a full crown the next growing season. I have cut half of the spear off before so that my tarp could fit over it. You can cut off the rest of the center leaves if you'd like. I never stored my robusta in the crawl space--only in the garage the fall I bought it, but it did overwinter well there. I bet it will be okay, but a better option would be to give it some light for a little photosynthesis this winter. Good luck, Tony!
