It's enough to make a grown man cry.
I have a Washie in a pot that grew really crazy this summer. That thing got way to huge to bring back in for the winter. The roots grew through the holes in the pot and into the ground. It is 9 feet from the base to the tip of the spear. The leaves spread about 15/16 feet across.
There was no way to over winter it there where it was. There's two things I could think of to do. Either leave it there till it froze, or try something different with it. Here's where the tears came in.
I decided to cut off all those big, beautiful leaves,
(21 of them) chop off the roots that anchored it in its spot, and move it. I wasn't sure where yet because of the size. You & Austin, if I remember correctly, mentioned about leaving the spears un-cut. There were still 3 spears still growing out the top. I decided to treat it like the banana plants, so I wheeled it to the well house and laid it down next to them. What do y'all think??? I sure hope this works. I'll let you know next spring.
