Rob, thanks for inviting my to this forum. I still haven't protected any of my palms including my washies. I plan on saving all my fronds with a similar but modified version of Stosh's protection. I need to modify since It's colder here and I don't want to heat crazy. Just to let you guys know my GDD is around 3200 not even close to have a washy survive without retaining green growth for spring.
I would say for you Brad if you plan on cutting off your fronds add a air space between your palm which you string lights around and your leaf en closer. This might not need to be as ugly as you think if you add a little picked fence out of straping in front of your stucture. This will work for a few years Brad, I know you live in a nice neighborhood. You can turn the lights on only when you think the temps are colder then your can can take. You could even put a cheap thermo cube in there on at 35 off at 45 if you don't want to bother. Remember like Rob said you need to air your can out since it dosen't breath.
Moisture is Bad with washies as you already know.
Hope this helped, I'll post pictures of mine when there on but I'm waiting til the last second.
Bill
