Brad it seems like in some years winter comes later and later. We are going to get zonked come December,January and Feb, and possibly March but you never know. We cant let a mild October fool us.
Brad your protection gear sounds awesome but I was never able to successfully overwinter my Washingtonian WITHOUT cutting back a couple of feet of trunk a few times until I used the can method with mulch but I never used heat except once. There use to be TWO of those palms. One died because I had them lighted up under a clear plastic tent and left the lights on one day and the daytime got up to 50* I guess and the trunks turned to mush and fell over. One died and the other lived. The one that lived had to have 18 inches of trunk removed twice when I was just wrapping good and covering with black garbage bags, Finally I used the can method and the mulch. This mulch filling seemed like adding 3 or 4 inches of wood fat around the real trunk and fighting off the freezes. Its worked twice at minus 8*f and several 0*f's and a ton of single digits. Im really a z6b but most all the time our low is about zero twice a winter. Every now and then we might be 7b but with constant lows at night below freezing , this isnt found in true zone 7's. So Im in the twilight zone , lol. I believe you and I are about the same type zone.
Brad Im like you but have been crossing my fingers each winter and Im no expert at all. Maybe you should (please
)ask a few others also because I would feel bad If I said YES , that would work. When you ask (big board good) be sure to report your normal lows in a normal year and be sure to add rain and snow also.
I will say this , My coldest low ever to happen here (and we have weather records from the 1880's) was -25*f below in 1985. The temps were below zero (day and night) for 3 days I think and back in 1988 or 89 The high one day was -2F.
If we ever had a once in a lifetime again , nothing would help. Luckily this form is cheap to buy and fast to grow. Thanks for letting me rattle on.lol.
