Brad ,I hear that, The best protection methods can be eye soars and dont look good in the yard. Many people only plant marginals in the back or out of sight.
I know one thing about Washingtonias.
They can sweat under plastic when the temps get above freezing and the sweat will freeze when the temps drops causing bud rot,
Keeping the fronds going on isnt going to help when the temps get way below freezing because the molecules break down and the frond dies(but not the tree). I always trim the fronds off and I even cut the spear back sharply to the crown.
This wont hurt it thank goodness.
If you dont get below zero very often , I would CAN it. You know how that works. Garbage can inserted over the tree with bottom cut away , fill with hard chip mulch all around the trunk.
wrap a towel over crown portion add more mulch if you want and put lid back on it. dont forget to add even more mulch around the base of the can , maybe a foot high and come out a foot or so from the can.
Take lid off during mild days and change out moisture collecting towel from crown with a dry fresh one. I normally just hang the towel on a bush and let it air dry while the palm is breathing on a above freezing day.
Keep it dry.
DOnt let it sweat.
If you are someone that goes down below zero often, you could add lights to the trunk ,under the mulch. Ive never used heat and went -8*f twice in one week in 2003.
I know you know all this but wanted to share it with anyone unfamiliar.
Brad , we need to get busy , lol...looks like a cold spell next weekand November is almost here.haha, Have any question just hollar!
