What zone are you in ?
I wouldn't think the palms would cause a big problem dropping stuff in the pool unless they were planted so close to the edge that any seeds that eventually may form fell and ended up in there . Windmills , sabal palmetto and butia could work but , that would be zone dependent .
Definitely sabal minors/saw palmetto/needle palms would be good as they don't get so tall . Very cold hardy .
Bananas don't drop anything except in high wind conditions the leaves can shred and pieces of the big leaves can blow into the pool . Musa Basjoo is a good choice but there are others that could do well such as varieties of sikkimensis , itinerans and possibly some others that could possibly be left in year round .
For a true tropical look you should include some colocasias and alocasia as well as some cannas . Hardy hibiscus is another great choice .
I also like vines such as honeysuckle , trumpet vine and clematis .
Ornamental grass is another choice for a tropical look . The problem I have in the fall is when it blooms it blows some stuff in the water . Not a huge problem but , it happens .
Another thought would be some bamboo but , it does shed some leaves as well as the sheaths from around the culms .
Knowing the zone will dictate what you can actually be successful with on a long term basis with a minimum of protection .
Good Luck and lets see some pics ...
