Jim , Sounds great on your new project.
There are a couple of guys here that are simply landscape masters , hopefully you can get some feed back from them because you should grow anything they do.
If I remember correctly it can get nasty in the winter where you live so just off the top of my head I would say go Musa Basjoo Banana and some of those great Texas Palm Imposters , those fabulous Tree Yuccas- Yucca Torreyi and Yucca Treculeana . You might could do Washingtonia Robusta (Mexican Fan Palm) depends on your winter lows and moisture but the NEEDLE PALM and SABAL MINOR (small bushy scrub palms, would thrive for you) hope you get some good tips.
