This summer has been great for us, Rob. We are 7-9 inches above normal for rainfall this year. I have seemed to learn what can grow here and what cannot over the last 6 years.
The Louisiana is trying to trunk really badly. It seems to want to be like Carl's 'Sonny' minor.
Butias are hardy in southern Arkansas. They get minor winter damage most winters in central Arkansas, but I think we could get cold enough to kill the butias here if the winter is bad. That's why I always turn on the floodlights for temps below 15*F. I want to try to keep it as nice looking as possible.
The waggies are from California. I bought three at once from a guy on Ebay and they turned out to be of stellar form. These are the ones shown in the pics. I do have some one year old seedlings from Jeff St. Gelias in Canada, but they only have small strap leaves. I can't wait to see how they compare with these from CA. Waggies are one of my favorite trachycarpus for sure. With all the wind, the fronds still look great.
That banana is a Zebrina. Not cold hardy, so I will dig them up and store them under the crawl space. I hope they will make it that way. Time will tell.
The trunk debooting does take some time. The lower boots pulled right off, but the boots higher up were still attached well. I have used a box cutter to strip them down and remove the excess. So far, it's looking mighty tropical. I want to go up most of the trunk and will get a pic of it when I'm done.
Keep growing those great palms in TN. Don't give up after a bad winter. Instead, plant more palms!
Take care, Rob!
