I moved up to the great white north last November and experienced my worst winter in 15 years waiting anxiously to get a shovel in the ground. As some of you may have seen some of my snow and deer pics earlier this year, we have long winters. Well March came along and I finally was able to start digging. Here is what the place looked like last October for the home inspection.
This is what 1100 sq. feet of sod dumped in the woods looks like
This is the front yard now. Everything planted should be reasonably deer resistant and so far, knock on wood, nothing has been nibbled on. Everything is obviously quite small as there are several mail order plants in the landscape.
Back palm bed with dianthus and various herbs
Small needle and Arp rosemary in my warmest microclimate
Back bed with needle and McCurtain that get protection from overhang
Largest needle purchased 3 years ago from Alligator Alley
View of front from porch. Front bed contains E.ventricosum, W. robusta, grasses, creeping thyme, kniphophia, perovskia, agastaches, catmint, veronica, dianthus, baptisia, black sambucus, papyrus, cordyline, basjoo, unknown banana, "coffee cups" EE's and other stuff that will be fun to watch grow. The upside down pot with no mulch around it are some wires where I will put a new lamp post.
Camelia sasanqua, brunera, ferns. liriope, carex
Different views of the desert bed
My 2 year old son calls the cactus on the bottom right 'Mickey Mouse'
This "trichocereus grandiflorus hybrid" was purchased at Lowe's for $2.50. It says its hardy to 20F. It will likely be an annual.
I look forward to watching it grow and will keep you updated as I try to grow these thing in a very cold 6a with long snowy winters.
